Robotics evokes a wide variety of images based on who you are, what you've seen in popular media, how much you keep up with current technology and how you envision the future.

A robot is most commonly seen as a mechanical device that performs actions in the physical world based on inputs from the physical world.  Typically the actions of the robot would seem to have intent or motive.  Typically this would be implemented as some orchestrated behavior or by reading sensors and reacting with predetermined actions many times per second.

Robotics used to be only available to groups with a lot of resources.  Today with a bit of programming knowledge and one of a large number of inexpensive starter kits or generic microcontroller boards pretty much anyone can develop a simple robot.
